Here at Avant Eyes, we LOVE debunking eye myths. Anywhere from cosmetic ingredients to when to use your glasses, the internet is FULL of misinformation, especially today in the world of social media. Here are a few eye myths we hear often in our clinic!
TRUTH: Regular eye exams are crucial even if you’re not experiencing symptoms. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration, can develop with few or no symptoms in the early stages. Routine exams allow eye care professionals to detect and address issues early, potentially saving your vision.
TRUTH: Wearing glasses doesn’t make your eyes dependent on them or make your vision worse. People often feel more reliant on their glasses simply because they’re used to seeing more clearly with them (our brains like clear vision!). Glasses simply correct your vision when you wear them but don’t impact your eye health or change the natural progression of your visual needs.
TRUTH: Nothing could be further from the truth. Although age is a risk factor, younger people can develop eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. Glaucoma can even occur in infants and young adults, and certain risk factors (like family history or specific health conditions) make some people more prone to eye disease at a younger age. Regular eye exams are essential for catching these conditions early. Our doctors at Avant Eyes are residency trained to manage conditions such as glaucoma of all ages.
TRUTH: Nope! While carrots are a good source of vitamin A, which is important for eye health, they won’t magically improve your vision or prevent the need for glasses. A balanced diet rich in a variety of nutrients – including vitamin C, E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids – is beneficial for overall eye health. Leafy greens, fish, nuts, and fruits are also important for supporting vision.
