What is the difference between a vision discount plan and medical insurance plan?
Your vision discount plan will provide discounts on exam fees, contact lens evaluations, frames, lenses and contact lenses.
I.e the fee for a vision exam may be $200 and your vision discount plan confers a copay of $10, effectively discounting the fee by $190.
Other discounts provided by this plan include discounts on lens materials, but the patient is still responsible for copays. This is distinctly different from medical insurance, which typically has coinsurance, deductible and an out-of-pocket maximum.
A vision discount plan is not insurance!
It is always a good idea to look at your insurance contract prior to your doctor’s visits to understand which benefits you have.
Can I use my vision plan for a dry eye consultation?
No. A vision discount plan only covers a routine eye exam. Think of a routine eye exam as a routine physical at your primary care doctor’s office. Any medical complaints are billed to your medical plan.
So what if I need a glasses prescription AND I have dry eyes?
We always recommend a dry eye consultation first as dry eyes can affect your prescription up to 1.5D! Yes, there have been studies on this!
