What Is Covered By My Vision Discount Plan?

Examples of vision discount plans that are accepted at Avant Eyes are: VSP, EyeMed, Spectera and Superior (as of 2024- subject to change).

A vision plan discounts your exam but you may still have a copay.

Example: eye exam is $100, copay is $10, vision plan discount is $90.

Materials also have copays, depending on how you would like to build your glasses.

For example, progressives have a separate copay than single vision.

Anti glare coating has a separate copay than any of the above.

We read these copays from your plan. They are not set by our office; they are set by your plan and are consistent wherever you use your plan!

How do contact lens evaluations work?

This is considered an additional exam from your routine exam. You may have a vision discount plan that has no benefit for contact lens evaluation. In that case, you will pay out of pocket for the contact lens evaluation.

Routine vision exams cover a measurement of glasses and/or contact lens evaluations. They are preventative exams. They do not cover any medical complaints. Think of this as analogous to when you visit your PCP- a routine wellness exam with your PCP covers your annual exam and blood labs. But does not cover any medical complaints or specialized blood work.

Example:

Routine exam: check glasses prescription, contact lens exam, basic functional testing.

Medical exam: dry eyes, red eye, glaucoma testing, macular degeneration testing.

Medical exams are always billed to medical insurance, and copays, deductibles and coinsurances may apply. It is always the patient’s responsibility to know these amounts prior to visiting any doctor’s office.

What if I need both?

Always mention both when you schedule your appointment. It will help us to understand how to approach your exam and which testing you will need to address the reason for your visit. This is important because if you have a medical condition that affects your glasses prescription, you want to ensure that we address that first so that your glasses prescription is as accurate as possible.

What if I mention that I need a routine exam over the phone and the doctor determines that this is a medical exam?

We will inform you of this and bill your medical insurance based on the reason you document for your visit.
