What Should I Avoid In My Under Eye Cream?

There are many ingredients to avoid in your under eye cream. Why? Because certain ingredients (at the right concentration) can cause damage to the delicate meibomian glands that live in your eyelids. This will inevitably lead to Dry Eye Disease, a chronic (yet manageable) condition that can lead to blurred vision, constant redness, irritation, foreign body sensation, light sensitivity, contact lens intolerance and more.

DId you know that the European Union bans >1300 ingredients in their cosmetics, yet the US FDA only bans 11..?!

Ingredients to avoid:

Benzalkonium Chloride

Chlorhexidine digluconate

Chlorphenesin

DMDM-hydantoin [1,3-Bis (hydroxy-methyl)-5,5- dimethylimidazolidine-2,4- dione]

Quaternium-15

Retinoids (Vitamin A metabolites, such as13-cis retinoic acid; isotretinoin)

Sodium benzoate

Phenoxyethanol

What should you look for?

Hyaluronic acid

Vitamin C

Pomegranate seed oil

Azelaic acid

Remember: the sum (and concentrations) of all ingredients is more important than its individual parts in a product.
